Wrong! Many employers mistakenly believe that what an individual earns is a private matter and shouldn’t be discussed with other employees. Some employers outright prohibit the discussion of this topic via policy, while others subtly discourage it. Either way, this violates the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), which applies to both union and nonunion employers. Section 7 of the NLRA expressly permits employees to discuss the terms and conditions of employment – including pay and benefit information. Any actions or policies to the contrary, can land the employer on the wrong side of the law.
