Pittsburgh Enacts COVID-19 Paid Sick Leave Ordinance

On December 9th Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto signed a Temporary COVID-19 Emergency Paid Sick Leave Ordinance. This gives certain workers in the city an additional 80 hours of paid sick time taking effect immediately.

Pittsburgh employers with at least 50 employees must make the maximum amount of paid leave available to eligible employees in addition to time that is already available to them. Employees are covered if they have been employed for the previous 90 days and either:

  • work in Pittsburgh,
  • normally work in Pittsburgh, but currently telework from any location because of COVID-19, or
  • work in Pittsburgh at least 51% of the time while working in mobile or other locations the remaining time.

Available leave is determined by the number of hours worked by the employee. For those who work 40 hours per week or more, the amount is an additional 80 hours of sick time. Employees who work 39 hours or fewer per week are to have an additional number of hours equal to their average amount worked in two weeks.

This temporary leave may be used for an employee to quarantine due to COVID-19 exposure or symptoms, or to care for a family member with COVID-19.
