What’s wrong with music in the workplace?

Music is pervasive in workplaces - whether that is music played by individual employees or broadcast over the employer’s speakers - but not all music is the standard “elevator” music that is often played in reception areas.  Recently, an employer was sued for sex discrimination because it routinely piped rap music into its warehouse.  The rap lyrics contained vulgar and violent language.  The employer argued that the female employee’s case should be dismissed since both males and females could be equally offended by the rap music and, therefore, there was no sex discrimination.  The court disagreed and allowed the sex discrimination lawsuit to proceed.  This highlights the sensitivity employers may need, when considering music, and other factors, such as artwork, etc. that may be in the workplace.
